The committee unanimously approved the minutes from the meeting held on September 4, 2007.

The Chair briefly discussed the strategic planning process, products, and schedule. He indicated that the committee meeting schedule was provided for review. Further, he indicated that the committee would begin the planning process with a discussion of the strategic planning environment.

Dr. Mark Palazesi distributed summaries of the STEEPLE Environmental Scan Exercise and explained the process for organizing the STEEPLE scans into topical areas. Dr. Palazesi facilitated the committee’s discussion of the factors identified in the STEEPLE Scan Analysis.

Dr. Palazesi indicated that the next step will be to consolidate and prioritize the factors. He suggested that the committee members reference the STEEPLE Scan Analysis and select six individual factors from the five year section and four individual factors from the twenty year section. Committee members were asked to forward their selections to Dr. Palazesi for consolidation.

The Chair indicated that a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) Exercise form was provided to committee members. At the next meeting, the committee will begin the SWOT exercise and also review the STEEPLE Scan Consolidation.

Mr. Frank Murphy indicated that a Strategic Planning website had been created (http://fsuspc.fsu.edu). The website provides the committee’s charge, membership, and also provides an opportunity for the university community to make suggestions to the committee. Mr. Murphy reviewed the features of the planning website with the committee. Suggestions for modifications to the website should be sent to the Chair, who will work with Mr. Murphy to make any necessary changes.

The Chair indicated that he will ask Dr. Jayne Standley to draft a revised mission and vision statement. Mr. Randy Hanna will be asked to outline the purpose and scope of an external committee and report back to the committee at its next meeting.

Dr. Ross Ellington indicated that the Pathways of Excellence Distinguished Lecture Series will begin with a lecture by Dr. James J. Duderstadt on Monday, September 24 at 4:00 p.m. in the Alumni Center. He encouraged committee members to attend.

The Chair announced that the next meeting will be held on Friday, September 28, at 3:00 p.m. in Room 201, Westcott Building.
